Top 6 Remote Adventures

Remote experiences are trending as they provide a range of physical and emotional benefits that many of us desire from joining an adventure. Before and after the experience, these benefits include the pre-training to increase fitness to become physically ready for the adventure and the sense of achievement of succeeding at the challenge of completing a difficult track. During the trek itself, there arise the enjoyment trekking through landscapes where there is no other person in sight, the chance to disconnect from technology and the demands of a busy lifestyle and the opportunity to reflect and clear the mind thanks to the serenity of the remote wilderness. It’s an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city and an experience to immerse into backwoods where it feels like you have stepped into the lost world.

There’s no time like the present to embark on an experience within our National Parks. While development in National Parks has the benefit of opening the parks up to a broader section of trekkers, it also means more people on the tracks. At present, only a couple of hundred people walk the South Coast Track each year but the construction of private huts in the coming years means now is the time to trek the track.

Tasmanian Expeditions’ trekking and rafting adventures range from moderate to challenging grading and 5 - 9 days expedition duration.

Here’s our top 6 remote adventures in Tasmania.

  • South Coast Track winds it way through the heart of the Southwest National Park. Graded challenging, it’s on many adventurer’s bucket list - though only a couple of hundred people commit to the challenge every season. One of the Great Walks of Tasmania, the South Coast track can only be walked in one direction with a flight into Melaleuca to commence the trek and ending 9 days later at picturesque Cockle Creek.  It’s got many different terrains - beaches, creeks to cross (sometimes chest high) and the mighty Ironbound Ranges.
  • Mount Anne Circuit offers a vast range of vegetation, ranging from the lush green rainforests to the towering grey-green gum trees through to the delicate flowers and grasses of the alpine regions. Located in the World Heritage Listed Wilderness Area in the Southwest National Park, you’ll summit Mount Anne at 1,425 metres and  other surrounding peaks during the 5-day adventure, passing high altitude lakes, walking spectacular ridgelines walk. and scrambling over boulders on this rewarding loop bushwalk.
  • Frenchman’s Cap Trek summits thehighestpeak in the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park in the West Coast. It is an iconic peak of quartzite and provides unsurpassed views of the entire World Heritage Wilderness, with the mighty Franklin River at its western base. At 1,446 metres, it was used as a guiding beacon for escaping convicts to pass through the thick scrub to reach other settlements. Enjoy spotting the endemic sub-alpine flora on this challenging but rewarding 6-day adventure.
  • Port Davey Track takes you into Tasmania’s largest park, the Southwest National Park and into the Lost World Plateau with its pristine river systems and cool temperate rainforest remnants. It feels like a world away with jagged towering mountains, ancient rainforest with the rare Huon Pine, sweeping rivers and open plains. The walk crosses Bathurst Harbour and there’s an opportunity to summit Mt Hesperus in the Western Arthur Range. Combine the South Coast Track with the Port Davey Track over 16 days where you’ll experience the best of both tracks.
  • Franklin River Rafting is a true expedition, as you raft through pristine wilderness in a beautiful World Heritage Listed Area. The Franklin is well known for being at the centre of  a historical political environmental campaign that sprang up in the late 1970s to protect the river from damming. The now protected river carves its way through the Franklin-Gordon Wild River National Park and is as pristine as it was four decades ago. This Tasmanian Expeditions –operated trip was named by Outside Magazine as the ‘World’s Best River Journey’ and you can experience it for yourself, as you visit Rock Island Bend, the Lost World and the Kutikina Aboriginal Cave all on river highlights. Frenchman’s Cap is nearby, and you can opt to include a walk to summit it on the 11-day ultimate exploration of the national park.

  • Flinders Island Walking Adventure is remote by locationas the island is one of 52 in the Furneaux Group across the Bass Strait in the north-east of Tasmania. It is a small island and earns the title ‘Tasmania’s best kept secret’. Home to 18 million mutton birds, wombats, wallabies and echidnas, you’ll be sure to see the island’s wildlife and birdlife along the walk. Summitting peaks, traversing coastal and green pastures and walking to The Docks a little known location where you’ll discover orange lichen covered boulders scattered along the picturesque beach. You’ll only have to carry a day pack during this 6 day adventure.

Other walks to consider include Australia’s number one alpine walk - the Walls of Jerusalem, which can be trekked in summer and winter. The winter experience is simply stunning with a white winter wonderland backdrop and snowshoeing involved. Close by as the crow flies is the Overland Track, an iconic walk commencing at Cradle Mountain and finishing 6 days later at Lake St Clair.
